artist critique: michael magrath

Hey everybody, here is an e-mail that anne friedman sent me about getting a crit fom a guest lecturer. he is in to critiquing us. perhaps you know his salt sculptures from pioneer square.
let me know if you are interested in receiving a crit from him by tomorrow!

Hello Kate,

I talked with Mike and he had some questions, so please let me know what you
and the other students think.

He could probably come talk with your group before the lecture, say noon-ish
till 2:30 on Tuesday May 20.

As I recall you said there are 9 students in the group, right? Are you all
working on similar projects or are you working in very individual
directions? Mike likes to spend about 20 minutes on each individual crit,
which doesn't leave enough time for 9 people. Or a group crit if people are
working on similar projects (which I assumed you weren't). One idea was
maybe shorter individual crit's with the group of 9 all listening in, so
maybe they build on each other and everyone benefits from each person's
crit. Each person would have 2-3 artworks to show, everyone showing in
close proximity (as I recall you all are working in the studios in the
annex?).

So, let me know. Call if that's easier, 867-5425. I should be around early
afternoon tomorrow; morning and early afternoon on Wed.

CIEL Paragraph (Rough and Dirty)

Our primary goal involved putting on a group art show. In preparation for this we faced the challenges of fundraising, art making, group organization, and curating. We had bi weekly bake sales, and a Valentine’s Day Secret Café raising enough money to rent an abandoned store front on a busy street in downtown Olympia.(Picture of secret café, then of empty space). In two days time we turned a white room with ugly carpet into a well curated gallery space. With each of us bringing items from our own houses we transformed this sterile environment into a comfortable home-like setting, utilizing the theme “The Feeling of Being at Home in the Universe.” (Picture of everything set-up). We split our group into teams to ensure that public relations, clean-up, set-up, design, and curatorial were all given proper attention. The show was packed opening night, exposing our art to more people than we had ever anticipated. (Picture of people at show). By banding together as a group of ten and taking control and responsibility of our own show instead of relying on the college, we maintained a high level of professionalism, considering every decision and detail that faced us. As a result we put on one of the most impressive art shows that Evergreen has seen.

I won't have my hard copy tomorrow until we go to the school. Maybe we can edit there?? While organizing the photos??

introduction to ciel

hey lets edit hard copies all of these writings on monday meeting
here is what i have for the intro so far
----
hey everyone. its an honor to be in front of you.

We are 4 members of an upper division art group that goes by the newly anointed title Wunderkammer. We consist of 10 upper division art students from The Evergreen State College :

Alphabetically, we are:
Ceradwen Bacon, from Friday Harbor, Washington
Dalton Cannizo, from New Jersey
Kate Clark, from Anacortes, Washington
Nick Goetling, from Gig Harbor, Washington
Ryan Hudgins, from Seattle, Washington
Vanessa Lang, from North Hampton Maine
Alicia Lewis, from Boulder, Colorado
Natalie Miller, from Tennessee
Kim Rutherford, from Washington D.C?

Our group used to go by W.F.S which stands for we’re fudging serious.
--how do I say this guys?? Do I say fuck at a conference?!-

Though tongue in cheek, the sentiment is also whole-hearted. However, after the quarter progressed and we experienced critique, fundraising, seminaring and curating an exhibition together, our group is now called Wunderkammer.

-show of Ryan’s illustration of each member of the group)

As students at Evergreen and like some of you from Fairhaven, we get the experience of being able to construct our independent curriculum. Also, as upper division art students attending a college that is focused primarily on the sciences, we found ourselves desirous of more community. Though independent contracts allow one to focus on their passion, it can at points be cloistering. We decided to form a group contract and critique, support, and further our work as well as each others.

CIEL paragrph

here is my draft on the critique section. i tried to write it as if someone were going to read it. tell me what you think....

As upper division contract students we work independently, without the structure of a program or class, so as we started the group one of the main focuses was to gain feedback from our peers and the arts community. To accommodate this we established a critique schedule in which we could display our work to each other, our own faculty sponsor, and occasionally other arts professors that were not as familiar with our own work. Since each person came from a different background, and a different medium, these critiques were extremely unique with a variety of input. How does a photographer critique a sculpture or a ceramicist view a painting? It was both challenging and enlightening to so regularly consider another’s medium. The artist always had a choice on how his or her critique was run leaving it up to the artist to ask for feedback on particular questions or concerns.
Critique became a time to reflect. We began to draw connections not only between our own work, but also in the books that we were reading. Strangely enough many of the artists seemed to have an epiphany with the works On Longing by Susan Stewart and Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard. This running dialog between critique, reading and seminar eventually carried itself right into our end of the quarter show.

more udates

The Reef is still primarily a hang out time, but being week 1 we discussed a lot of important crap last night.

First and foremost, Alicia and Dalton have decided to leave us. They both have very valid reasons so don't stone them till you talk to them. Both of them still offered their time to help us out (Dalton with a workshop and Alicia said she would be willing to come to critique, she just doesn't want to be critiqued).

Updates

Julia is ok to come to meetings if they are at 9:00am monday mourning. That way she doesn't have to take time off for both ways to Vics.
She is not available for critique M-F 9-5 which is problem no? She can do SAT. anytime which I am behind. If we want to do after 5 some night scheduling will be a mess but maybe?

Also I am having second-third-fourth thoughts about my commitments this quarter, will talk about it on wedn. at reef

Things that make you go Ohhh

Hey,

Susan says she can really only meet on Fridays for crits. Maybe it would be a good idea to post the availability of each staff in these comments as they are discovered.

Visiting artists:
Teus week 2: June Northcroft Grant-painter/fiber,
week3:Patti Warshina-ceramic sculptor
week4:James Luna-performance/photo- ALSO He is doing a performance (maybe the one Erica is reenacting?) that Friday 25th at 8. It is free for us, but we need to reserve tickets now/soon to get in. I am in. We need to either comment about being in, or get a tally at a Monday meeting ahead of time before it gets booked.
Week5: Joe Tougas/Ross Matteson...mid day...might just be FOVA but we could probably sit in. Will ask.
Week8: Micheal McGrath

She also told me to look up the New York Review of Books, which I guess is the goto publication to find what good new literature is out and how to write a good critical essay about a book. Maybe look at it if you are having a little trouble responding to the readings or looking to find a good read.

I think I am also driving to Seattle Arts Walk this Thursday evening.

Monday Meeting

Yeah!!

You guys, the new quarter is fast encroaching on your leisure time, and I come bearing a REALITY CHECK, whether you like it or not. Time to get your act together. Natalie, Nick, Alicia, Dalton, Kim, and I had a meeting at the Reef tonight where we decided on a meet time for next week (and virtually nothing else).

MEETING AT 11AM AT VIC'S THIS MONDAY!!

We'll attempt to answer these pressing questions:

Who's planning on showing this quarter?
Who's planning on participating in group readings?*
Who's planning on joining the group?
Who's planning on assuming what roles?
*Nobody who attended the meeting at the Reef is.

If you have an supplementary agenda items, comment them ASAP!

Thanks guys, and have a wonderful

Kate Winslet.

Holy Crap, and help

Wed at the reef for anyone in town? It is early, but it couldn't hurt with contracts and all...

Alright, so if anyone in the group is as nerd-inclined as myself, you will be excited to know that astrophysicist and PBS NOVA host-with-the-most Neil deGrasse Tyson is coming to Evergreen April 29th. Costs $5 but get them while they last. Why is he so cool you ask? Well he wrote "Death By Black Hole" for starters...

Also, I am thinking about doing some volunteer work. It will take time away from studio and all that so I thought it may be good to write it into my contract. I haven't contacted the school to investigate it (as it is 2:30) but thought I would see if anyone knows if that could work, and who to talk to?

regards
-nick

If you had to choose one piece...

Hey Guys,

Got an email from Rita, and she needs us to let CIEL know what/how much artwork we are bringing to the symposium. If you are interested in showing your work, please comment on this post with the size and space you will need to show it. There are ten other students at the symposium that are showing artwork too. The sooner we let them know the better it'll be.

Thanks,

Nat

for KIM

Hey Kim, your email address isn't accepting mail, so here is the general group description I've come up with so far

WFS
We are a group of advance art students who sought out a support structure that Evergreen was not offering. We found each other and set up our own community by doing shared readings, holding seminars, critiques, and events. Though we work in many different types of mediums, from pencil drawings to sugar sculpture, we have created an intimacy with and influenced each other's work.

Wunderkammer (a.k.a. Cabinet of Curiosities) The word cabinet originally described a room, rather than a specific piece of furniture. Beginning in the 16th century, these were rooms (and later a smaller series of shelves) that housed arranged collections of interesting objects. The objects came from a variety of sources from geology, archeology, natural history, art, or religious relics. These objects were wonderous and often a blend of fact and fiction, such as taxidermy mythical animals. "In 1587 Gabriel Kaltemarckt advised Christian I of Saxony that three types of item were indispensable in forming a "Kunstkammer" or art collection: firstly sculptures and paintings; secondly "curious items from home or abroad"; and thirdly "antlers, horns, claws, feathers and other things belonging to strange and curious animals""
The Wunderkammer was a place for solace and meditation as well as setting to convey allegory and power through the symbolic arrangement of the objects which acted as a microcosm of the greater world.

even small plants need watering

A bunch of business:
*podiums-Judy talked to Marty and he is giving us two hundred dollars to go towards podiums. We still have to make them, and afterwards they are property of the arts annex, but it is still a lot off our shoulders. I think each person should be in charge of their podiums. I am meeting Judy Saturday morning to go buy 200 dollars worth of plywood (probably enough to make 6 if we can get it cheap). MONDAY- I am going to be in the wood shop as soon as the meeting is over to make two for me and help others. Sam from the metal shop also said he would help us in any way. This weekend, consider what dimensions would work for your pieces.

*labels- I think it is a great idea to have everyone make their own labels. However, we might still want to keep them consistent through format (except for Ryan as his are very relevant to his work). Title/Artist/Medium? or Artist/title/medium? artist/title, year/medium? what do you guys think?

*advertising- I was in the print studio for 4 hours today making hand bills for the opening. Maybe 150. There is more paper to print more, but I had to go to work and I only had Andrew there to help me. If you want to take some, they are on my desk at the studio. Because we have so few, I think these should be given to people very interested, not just handed out at random.

*money- A lot of people are going to be at the opening. How much money do we have for alcohol?

*space- Eight of us have yet to see the space. Do we have a key? Vanessa-can you see if we can get into the space early so the whole group can see what we are working with? It is going to be a tight fit, but I think that will make us choose our work more carefully and put on a kick ass show.

*mash potatoes- I just wanted you all to know that I have really enjoyed this group and am so excited about the show. I feel very confident that each of us will work very hard to put together the best exhibit we can.

Sorry that was so long; i have had a long day and maybe one too many beers. Please respond to this blog if you have conscerns or answers. I rather not wait till Monday to go over all of this.

CRITIQUE-Friday

Critique this Friday is 9:30-Noon. Sorry for not posting this earlier, I seriously thought I had told you'll.

Answers from Rita

We can all send a piece of artwork. Anyone can come, just pay the fee and we will figure something out. She is going to email me the dimensions and details about the space we will be using.

If anyone has ideas or feelings about how our group will be represented please contribute them.

Wunderkammer?!

love,
natalie

Email from Rita

I am posting the email I got from Rita for those of you who still need to register. A decision needs to be made soon, because registration is under a time constraint. The code that Rita mentions only applies to the fourth person. Otherwise, you can pay with a credit card (60.00). I am meeting with her today to discuss taking everyones artwork, and the details of this little excursion.

-Natalie

Dear all,

I am sending this note to those of you attending the CIEL Student Symposium at Fairhaven on April 10-12. Thanks to all of you for being willing to represent the college. If it is like past student symposia, I expect you will really enjoy meeting students from other colleges and hearing them speak in some depth about their work.

Here are the titles and team members for our three presentations:

1. "Skin" LaGuana Smith, Sarah Sweet. Artee Young, Director of the Tacoma Program

2. "Doing Work that Matters" Natalie Miller, Kim Retherford, Kate Clark. Rita Pougiales, Evergreen's CIEL coordinator

3. "PRESS:Creating a Culture of Writing." Tyler Bennett, Meghan McNealy. David Wolach, Evergreen faculty member.

I have logged on to the draft program. It still contains some errors, and I have passed on correct information on titles and participant names. So if you go on and find incorrect information be assured that they have received corrections from me.

So here are details for you. Each of these requires you to respond to me or to go on-line. The most time sensitive step is to go to the on-line registration site. If you can do this by tomorrow, we will get a bit of break on the conference fee. So here goes...

1. Each person has to register individually. They have a very easy on-line process. Just go to http://www.festivalofscholarship.com/ and fill out the form. It requires you to pay the conference fee. We are covering that on what we call a "Purchase Order." The number you should put in for that is R0014394 If any of you have difficulty with this please be in touch with Janet Herbison (facultyhiring@evergreen.edu). Her office is SEM II D 4102. And her phone number is 360-867-6863.

2. We have reserved a van to get folks to Fairhaven College. Once we are there, there will be shuttle service to get people in and out of Bellingham. Please let me know if you would like to go in the van. We won't be able to cover your transportation costs if you drive a private vehicle. Once I hear who would like to take the van, I will ask when you want to leave. Since events get started Thursday morning, we might consider going up Wednesday evening.

3. We will provide lodging for anyone who needs it. Hopefully the students on each team can share a room. Let me know if you want us to make these reservations and with whom you will share a room. We cover the cost for this.

4, The conference fee includes lunches and one dinner. For all other meals, we will ask you to keep your receipts. The state sets an upper limit for what we can reimburse for each meal. I will let you know those amounts before we go.

(Because this has some personal information in it, I will only leave it on the blog for a day or so. I suggest printing it out if you need the info.)

so, i called the real estate manager guy about the rent estimate and he said that he would remeasure, but it would most likely be $330. That sounds pretty alright. Are you all game? i'm in. anyway maybe post your response? we'll need to sign a temporary lease. we need to discuss layout ideas ands potential show design plans. i would like to have live music, but instrumental noisy stuff. i guess i'll save my ideas for our next meeting. ok.

No critique tomorrow

Hi everyone,
At the meeting we agreed it would be better if we didn't have critique this week. I emailed Lisa and told her we wouldn't need her.
We should figure out what to do about the academic fair. I don't think we can re-arrange Lisa anymore, her schedule is too tight. Maybe we can keep the Sweets as scheduled and move the Savories to another time?

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The good: fig drawing at olympia free school (downtown right off of capitol) this sunday 7-9 for us kids behind in that. Come one come all...

The bad: Kim mentioned that our next crit is schedualed during the academic fair. Could be a problem no?

The ugly: Judy Bauman is looking for two wayward skullzzz. Anyone seen them? They were last seen on top of two skeletons in the fig. drawing room.

Pedestals

Hey I asked Judy if there are any pedestals available to us and it sounds like there are but Bob Leverich is going to need some too for Shaping and they will get priority.

This totally sucks, and I'm sorry.

I became aware last night of another lice outbreak in my house/group of friends.  Unfortunately all of you were at my house recently.  I just want to say that giving your head a check for lice would be smart... and I'm really sorry for this scare/notice.   Some of you are at more risk than others. If you do end up with lice and need someone to pick your nits, I will be that someone.

If you have questions about lice... I am now the lice trivia princess.  Just call.

It's been hell.
Love,
Natalie

p.s. sorry

UPDATE:

i am gonna meet with some dude at 10:30 on monday to check out the space by jakes, sorry i guess i'll miss the meeting-anyone wanna come with? please? i'm nervous. i'm gonna wear a business suit.
hey hommies...so i called the two spaces that kim posted (thanks kim) and i will be conversing with both soon (they were both in meetings) it sounded positive . ummm so Emily is real interested in showing with her group along with us, they are 4 students making some awesome color black&white photos, prints, and sculptures of weapons. there are also 3 students that would preforming-spoken word. They have $300 to contribute.
i think this would really add to our show, generate more interest and bring a larger audience. This would mean potential editing of work so we are all showing our most awesome works, We could vote on this shit. one vote for yes.
any questions about the other group- just ask me and I'll relay to Emily.

Next week critique

Lisa pointed out that the way our critique schedule is now, the Sweets will be going both week eight and week nine. It doesn't seem likely that most of us will be able to get enough work done in between these critiques to merit both sessions. It has been proposed that we skip week eight critique in favor of having a really knock-out final critique. I am in favor of this option. Any one else? Jake, if you want both critique days, maybe week eight can just be for you.

notes from the meeting

Hi everyone, just thought I would re-cap the decisions made at the meeting:

1. We will now be meeting at Vic's instead of at school for our Monday meeting and seminar. Same time, friendlier place. We will make sure that people who are manning the bake sale or who need to get to their jobs on campus get rides.

2. I will be at the Reef every wednesday night at 8. Everyone who needs to talk about their process or ideas or art (or anything else) should be there, too.

3. Natalie will communicate with Rita about more people from our group attending and/or speaking at the symposium.

4. Everyone look for a different space. We have a backup plan, we can make it work, now let's find the perfect space. We have until the first of the month (right?). We want our opening on Thursday of week ten, the 13th of March. Ideal dates to have the space are March 12-19.

5. Everyone bring ten suggestions for a new name to the next meeting.

6. We will start having drawing field trips for those who are interested.

7. We will keep the group size at 10 for next quarter. However, we can invite other students to come critique us and be critiqued by us as one-time "guests artists".

Legging it UP!

Some numbers for spaces:
414 the old Bhuddist House
253.961.2299 or 360.584.4100

319 4th Ave, left of Jake's (the bar not the dude)
360.259.1894

I collected the numbers, if someone else wants to the talking. I'm not the greatest haggler.

Considerations for Next Quarter

I was at Orca today and took the opportunity to comb through the art books for spring quarter. Here are three books I know nothing about but seemed interesting:
Unnatural Wonders by Arthur C. Danto -Alicia you mentioned wanting to read some Danto, have you read this before
Visual Shock: a History of Art Controversies in American Culture by Michael Kammen -this looked really interesting, check out the reviews on Amazon.
Writing on the Wall: Word and Image in Modern Art by Simon Morley - Nick, I was thinking of your recent interest in text, but I think this would benefit all of us.

Also Consider Taking the Leap: Building a Career as a Visual Artist by Cay Lang -Alicia and I have both read parts of this. It is exactly what the title says. detailed and current.

Is this the indiscernable thing that links us?

maybe the wunderhammer is what we are all looking for....

Ryan is awesome

Ryan, Matt Hamon is just wrong.
Wrong.
Ryan's work this week made huge conceptual progress. Matt meant well, he meant to push you, which you are up to the challenge of, but he was wrong.
Ryan. Made. Progress.

after you left, everyone said:
Yay Ryan!!!!

Thought you should know.

Ryan doesn't suck unless he wants to

I just want to put it out there that Matt Hamon was completely off about his comments on Ryan's work. In looking at Ryan's work today I felt more drawn to and intrigued by it than I have been before. I feel that he has made a break through, the work is more resolved in idea and as a series. Hamon may have meant well but his arguments were unconvincing. I feel it is no one's position to remind someone of their age and give that as an excuse for the quality of the work that they make.

Wednesday! Meeting! Seminar! Fun!

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the last minute, but.....
How about we meet for dinner after critique on Wednesday. We can have a meeting, seminar, and hang out. And eat cupcakes.
I am offering my house for this, with the fair warning that it is small and I haven't had time to tidy, so you will witness the chaos I live in. OR you can volunteer your own house.
Good. See ya'll tomorrow.

be there

Monday Meeting?

Are we going to have a seminar on monday? Cause it's a holiday. Dead Prezidents Day to be exact. Can we reschedule to another time - like wednesday mourning? Or tuesday if we can figure out peoples schedules...

CIEL Symposium

Hey Everyone,

So, last night I was talking to my friend Meghan, who is in charge of a group called "Press", which is another student run collective/group at Evergreen. They also received an email from Rita asking if they would like to attend the symposium in Bellingham for Collaborative Innovative Experimental Learning. She told me that we should go talk to Rita. So today Kim and I went and talked to Rita about the details of this invitation and she was really excited that we wanted to be involved. Groups from all over the country are going to be there giving presentations/performances/etc. of what they are all about. This is a really awesome opportunity for us to get our name and work out there. Evergreen has funding for four of us to go, Kim, Kate, and I are signed up. We are all 3D artists and I think the fourth to attend should be a 2D artist. This entails 3 or 4 days in Bellingham the 2nd week of next quarter, a speech/presentation about your work, and work to be displayed at the symposium.

We are now a part of Collaborative Innovative Experimental Learning which means that any of us during our time at Evergreen have the opportunity to attend any of the other universities involved across the country (including their study abroad programs) for up to ONE YEAR, while paying tuition at Evergreen!!!! How fucking cool is that?! This is a big deal guys... we deserve this. There is even a program in Africa!!!!

So, if you have any desires/questions Kim and I are going to be in touch with the directors of this years symposium. Or if you have a question about the details.. or anything, just ask. I am sure I am leaving something out, but we will keep you posted.

We are Rockin!!!

drinks?

Hi everyone,
I miss your pretty faces. And I want to hear about how everyone is doing with their projects. So, this is kind of last minute, but I will be at le voyer (I know, I know, but they have my favorite beer on tap) at around 8:00 tonight. If anyone wants to come talk with me about art, I will love to see you. If not, I will talk to myself (which I need to do anyway - so don't feel guilty for not coming).
cool.

Did anyone els get the email from Rita about a conference at Western Washington? If so, is anyone interested? I am, but I wasn't in Erica's class so I don't know if I "qualify". Anyway, I would love to know what others think about this opportunity.

Directions to my house.

Hi,

I hope everyone can find a way to be in my living room at noon on sunday. Because I like you all, and you can meet Yoko (the man of the house, meow), and because we need to plan this secret cafe.

From downtown:
Heading east on fourth or fifth, take a right on Adams.
Adams turns into Jefferson near the post office, stay on Jefferson.
You will go through a few lights, two I think.
Take a left onto 13th ave. and go through two stop signs.
My house is blue, on the left side, surrounded by apartments, and has two really awesome trees in front.
It is almost at the end of the street, but not quite.

It isn't hard.
See you soon.

Sincerely,
Natalie

Monday Notes!

Hello!

Today we BLAZED THROUGH all sorts of interesting topics, and I think we're all better people for it.

A Recap:

CRITIQUE:

We decided that it would be much nicer if the artist being critiqued keeps track of time, so they may redirect conversation towards the end of their critique as they see fit. Also I will sass Matt Hamon into more active facilitation during critique (a la Sweet).
Pre-critique peer edits are the way of the future. Come a half hour or so early to get feedback on artist statements, essays, work descriptions, vaguely threatening letters to celebrities, etc.
Oh, and Lisa Sweet may not be available for critique next week, so a rescheduling is recommended. Someone should do that.

HOW ARE WE FEELING?

Guys, everything is going to be fine. Natalie is getting a cut of the profits from today's bake sale to buy doll hair, Vanessa found her bike, and Alicia makes ceramic ladies to keep creative. I say follow Alicia's example: chase those artistic doldrums away with little projects, aesthetic busy work, or just anything that gets your brain-wheels turning. Selected suggestions: read, listen to NPR or Bruce Springsteen, smoke some grass.

INAUGURAL MENTAL HEALTH ASSIGNMENT: Make a map. Due Monday

BAKES SALES:

1) Find your pastry vessels in the contract studio in the Arts Annexxx.
2) The Chem Club is just a bunch of jealous losers.
3) ASSIGNMENT: Make a dozen Valentines for the next bake sale!

SECRET CAFE:

We are meeting Sunday Evening at Natalie's house (714 13th Ave) for a TV-FREE SUPERBOWL FIESTA and Official Secret Cafe Meeting. Be there if you're interested (you should be).

Lastly, tomorrow Chris Jordan is giving an artist's talk at 3:45 in Lecture Hall 1.

This selcction is an essay by Saussure (like heir of sauce) found in From Modernism to Postmoderism: An Anthology. It will link up nicely with our chapters in On Longing. Also, for those interested, Andrew and I are going to type up a short introduction to Postmodernism.

if i recall correctly, Kim and Natilie said they had a copy of on long i could borrow, and if you could bring it in on the Monday meeting that would be great. also the capitol is showing a funny documentary called "my kid could paint that" about a 4 year old art star. could be awesome.

The Government IS good for something

The Library of Congress just posted its own Flickr set, which is kind of funny to me. Myspace page for the CAI comming soon?
But the 3,000+ images are really really great and I have been looking at them all day while I copy CD's at work. They seem to go backward from WW2 and cover a lot of great stuff. Check it!

Readings

hello all,
The reading list and schedule has been completed. A few articles have been removed, some new ones added, and half of Poetics of Space has been removed on the advise of Kim and Natalie, who previously read it. The new additions are mostly support for some of the theory discussed in On Longing. So the list is:

Poetics of Space - the first half
Art and Artifact - read in full
Art Objects by Jeanette Winterson - read in full
On Longing by Susan Stewart - excerpts
Air Guitar by Dave Hickey - four essays (can be xeroxed by the group)
"Art and Politics" - short essay by Virginia Wolf, will be xeroxed
"Devils Work" - a short essay, will be xeroxed
A short chapter on post modern theories of linguistics, will be xeroxed
Rhetoric of the Image by Roland Barthes, which is a chapter out of Image, Music, Text
The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin, Which is a chapter out of his book Illuminations. Will be xeroxed.
One Radio Lab story. Link will be provided.

The break down is as follows:
Week one
Ch. 1 Poetics of space
Intro Art and Artifact

Week two
Ch. 2 Poetics of Space
Ch. 1 Art and Artifact

Week three
Ch. 3 Poetics of space
Ch, 2 art and artifact
Air guitar: "A Life in the Arts" and "Romancing the Looky-Loos"

Week four
Ch. 4 Poetics of Space
Ch. 3 Art and Artifact
Postmodernist Linguistics chapter

Week five
Art Objects parts one and two
Ch. 4 Art and Artifact
"Art and Politics" by Virginia Wolf

Week six
Art Objects part three
Ch. 5 Art and Artifact
"The System of Objects"

Week seven
Ch. 6 Art and Artifact
On Longing section 1
"Devils Work"

Week 8
Epilogue Art and Artifact
On Longing section 5

Week 9
Rhetoric of the Image
Air guitar: " A Home in the Neon" and "The Birth of the Big Beautiful Art Market"

Week 10
Making Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction
Radio Lab - Detective stories

As the "readings commitee" we decided that we will be in charge of getting things copied. We thought it would be easier if we just made a disc with every article on it, which will be kept in the library on closed reserve, and we can just print off articles as needed. We will shortly email the link of those articles that are on line. There will also be a hard copy of the articles in closed reserve in the library. I would suggest that everyone buy or check out a copy of On Longing, as we will be reading a lot out of it.

I hope you like it.

movie

so, i talked to a projectionist at the capitol theater, Brian, and he agreed to show a film the night of Thursday, the 17th. i realized that the film i mentioned, "Edvard munch" is almost 4 hours, that could get painful. I was thinking of showing "The enigma of Kasper Hauser" by Hertzog.
Sound good? thoughts? movie ideas? beer?

Quick Notez

Just a few things, in case y'all forgot!

Wednesday Critique Schedule (semi-set-in-stone):

Savories (Hamon's Group):
4-6:30pm even weeks

Sweets (Sweet's Group):
9:30-12pm odd weeks.

Natalie proposed the ABC House basement as a potential space. It would probably cost in the neighborhood of $100 for a weekend. Take note!

And lastly, don't forget to comment on Kate's post listing your contribution to the Monday bakesale (which is from 11-1 and 3-4).

Group A critique (Matt's crew)

(jubilant expression) I have spoken with Matt, and Vanessa, and here is how it goes.
Wednesday afternoons we will have group A critique from 4 - 6:30pm. I don't yet know where... but that is the deal. Vanessa kindly rescheduled her shift in printmaking to accommodate us. Now we will always have critique on Wednesdays just at different times. (again jubilant expression)

Also I updated Ryan's Post with as much info as I currently possess.
Topics updated - critique schedules / times, bake sale dates to reflect kates post, meeting times, and the possibility of an av room secured by Manly Matt Ham-on (just heard back from him looks like a sem 2 room is a no-go but we can get a lecture hall in the rotunda - for thursday night screenings/cronk juice parties -pretty nice eh?)

Holy Cow... Baking Already!!

I'll make Brownies... I will also post this under comments in Kate's bake sale post.

Bakesales

So. I went to go pick up an extra bake sale form and the lady told me the dates that we are scheduled to sell: Jan. 14th, 28th, February 11th, 25th, and March 10th. You can sell from 8am-6pm
She said that you can also call and if no one is scheduled for a day you can perhaps do more than 5 days a quarter.
That means, next week, Week 2 instead of 3, is our first day.
Who wants to bake? Also, perhaps we should change the hours around a bit for our monday meeting/seminar to accomodate for this.
If you do make any purchases for the baking, give Dalton receipts. (just so we know someone isn't spending all of their money on stuff)
sorry Dalton to steal your thunder on this post, from now on I will step back.

Notes From Monday Meeting

Hey guys! Here's all the info I could gather from Kate's and my notes. Sorry if there are holes, I will take more robust notes in the future.

Firstly, WFS officially stands for whatever we want it to at the time.

Meetings This Week:

Wednesday at Noon: Meeting with Judy Bauman about studio space in Arts Annex.
Friday at 10:00: All-WFS meeting with Powerpoint presentations and seminar on Art and Artifact's introduction, and Chapter 1 of Poetics of Space.

Weekly Meetings are as follows:
meeting+seminar Mondays 10 - 1
critique Group A Wednesdays 4 - 6:30 pm
critique Group B Wednesdays mournings?
events-see below Thursday nights

Groups:

Group A = the savories (with faculty critique on even weeks): starting week 2
Ryan
Dalton
Kim
Vanessa
Natalie

Group B = the sweets (with faculty critique on odd weeks): starting week 3
Kate
Ceradwen
Alicia
Nick
Jake

Responsibilities:

Show space researchers: Jake and Natalie
Treasurer: Dalton
Secretary: Ryan
Communications: Ceradwen

Events:

Last Friday in Portland's Pearl District on January 29th: likely.
First Thursday the following week in Seattle: ?
Vanessa is looking into Thursday night screenings at the Capital at 11pm.
(update dalton - we might get a space in sem2 - one of the theater rooms- matt is working on it- because vanessa said this week is definitely no good @ ofs)

Fundraising:

Bake Sales:
Most likely every other Monday starting Week 2 (so, weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) we definitely have space reserved in the cab to hold our bake sales. I'm pretty sure Kim and Alicia agreed to head week 2, correct me if I'm wrong. The bake sales would most likely occur in two waves: 11am-1pm, then 3pm on. Crafts and reproductions/prints also on the menu.

Secret Cafe:
Natalie thinks her house would be good for one, possibly around Valentine's Day!

Also, consider Etsy.com.

Remember, everyone should aim to raise $100 dollars each over the course of the quarter.

That's all she wrote.

And of course by "she" I mean:

Kate Winslet.

Monday meeting

Hello everyone,
At the last meeting, if I recall, we didn't decide on a place and time because we were waiting to find out when we could get a room. As of tonight, we still don't know when or where we will be, but I think we should meet anyway. So, I am suggesting that we meet on Monday at 1:00 in the Library next to the stained glass windows, where we met last time. If we want to move from there, we can. If someone has a better place to meet, lets hear it.
Okay, happy new year everyone,
Alicia

kate article for you
