Our primary goal involved putting on a group art show. In preparation for this we faced the challenges of fundraising, art making, group organization, and curating. We had bi weekly bake sales, and a Valentine’s Day Secret Café raising enough money to rent an abandoned store front on a busy street in downtown Olympia.(Picture of secret café, then of empty space). In two days time we turned a white room with ugly carpet into a well curated gallery space. With each of us bringing items from our own houses we transformed this sterile environment into a comfortable home-like setting, utilizing the theme “The Feeling of Being at Home in the Universe.” (Picture of everything set-up). We split our group into teams to ensure that public relations, clean-up, set-up, design, and curatorial were all given proper attention. The show was packed opening night, exposing our art to more people than we had ever anticipated. (Picture of people at show). By banding together as a group of ten and taking control and responsibility of our own show instead of relying on the college, we maintained a high level of professionalism, considering every decision and detail that faced us. As a result we put on one of the most impressive art shows that Evergreen has seen.
I won't have my hard copy tomorrow until we go to the school. Maybe we can edit there?? While organizing the photos??
Dear all,
I am sending this note to those of you attending the CIEL Student Symposium at Fairhaven on April 10-12. Thanks to all of you for being willing to represent the college. If it is like past student symposia, I expect you will really enjoy meeting students from other colleges and hearing them speak in some depth about their work.
Here are the titles and team members for our three presentations:
1. "Skin" LaGuana Smith, Sarah Sweet. Artee Young, Director of the Tacoma Program
2. "Doing Work that Matters" Natalie Miller, Kim Retherford, Kate Clark. Rita Pougiales, Evergreen's CIEL coordinator
3. "PRESS:Creating a Culture of Writing." Tyler Bennett, Meghan McNealy. David Wolach, Evergreen faculty member.
I have logged on to the draft program. It still contains some errors, and I have passed on correct information on titles and participant names. So if you go on and find incorrect information be assured that they have received corrections from me.
So here are details for you. Each of these requires you to respond to me or to go on-line. The most time sensitive step is to go to the on-line registration site. If you can do this by tomorrow, we will get a bit of break on the conference fee. So here goes...
1. Each person has to register individually. They have a very easy on-line process. Just go to http://www.festivalofscholarshi
2. We have reserved a van to get folks to Fairhaven College. Once we are there, there will be shuttle service to get people in and out of Bellingham. Please let me know if you would like to go in the van. We won't be able to cover your transportation costs if you drive a private vehicle. Once I hear who would like to take the van, I will ask when you want to leave. Since events get started Thursday morning, we might consider going up Wednesday evening.
3. We will provide lodging for anyone who needs it. Hopefully the students on each team can share a room. Let me know if you want us to make these reservations and with whom you will share a room. We cover the cost for this.
4, The conference fee includes lunches and one dinner. For all other meals, we will ask you to keep your receipts. The state sets an upper limit for what we can reimburse for each meal. I will let you know those amounts before we go.
(Because this has some personal information in it, I will only leave it on the blog for a day or so. I suggest printing it out if you need the info.)

W2 and cover a lot of great stuff. Check it!
