Monday Meeting

Yeah!!

You guys, the new quarter is fast encroaching on your leisure time, and I come bearing a REALITY CHECK, whether you like it or not. Time to get your act together. Natalie, Nick, Alicia, Dalton, Kim, and I had a meeting at the Reef tonight where we decided on a meet time for next week (and virtually nothing else).

MEETING AT 11AM AT VIC'S THIS MONDAY!!

We'll attempt to answer these pressing questions:

Who's planning on showing this quarter?
Who's planning on participating in group readings?*
Who's planning on joining the group?
Who's planning on assuming what roles?
*Nobody who attended the meeting at the Reef is.

If you have an supplementary agenda items, comment them ASAP!

Thanks guys, and have a wonderful

Kate Winslet.

Holy Crap, and help

Wed at the reef for anyone in town? It is early, but it couldn't hurt with contracts and all...

Alright, so if anyone in the group is as nerd-inclined as myself, you will be excited to know that astrophysicist and PBS NOVA host-with-the-most Neil deGrasse Tyson is coming to Evergreen April 29th. Costs $5 but get them while they last. Why is he so cool you ask? Well he wrote "Death By Black Hole" for starters...

Also, I am thinking about doing some volunteer work. It will take time away from studio and all that so I thought it may be good to write it into my contract. I haven't contacted the school to investigate it (as it is 2:30) but thought I would see if anyone knows if that could work, and who to talk to?

regards
-nick

If you had to choose one piece...

Hey Guys,

Got an email from Rita, and she needs us to let CIEL know what/how much artwork we are bringing to the symposium. If you are interested in showing your work, please comment on this post with the size and space you will need to show it. There are ten other students at the symposium that are showing artwork too. The sooner we let them know the better it'll be.

Thanks,

Nat

for KIM

Hey Kim, your email address isn't accepting mail, so here is the general group description I've come up with so far

WFS
We are a group of advance art students who sought out a support structure that Evergreen was not offering. We found each other and set up our own community by doing shared readings, holding seminars, critiques, and events. Though we work in many different types of mediums, from pencil drawings to sugar sculpture, we have created an intimacy with and influenced each other's work.

Wunderkammer (a.k.a. Cabinet of Curiosities) The word cabinet originally described a room, rather than a specific piece of furniture. Beginning in the 16th century, these were rooms (and later a smaller series of shelves) that housed arranged collections of interesting objects. The objects came from a variety of sources from geology, archeology, natural history, art, or religious relics. These objects were wonderous and often a blend of fact and fiction, such as taxidermy mythical animals. "In 1587 Gabriel Kaltemarckt advised Christian I of Saxony that three types of item were indispensable in forming a "Kunstkammer" or art collection: firstly sculptures and paintings; secondly "curious items from home or abroad"; and thirdly "antlers, horns, claws, feathers and other things belonging to strange and curious animals""
The Wunderkammer was a place for solace and meditation as well as setting to convey allegory and power through the symbolic arrangement of the objects which acted as a microcosm of the greater world.

even small plants need watering

A bunch of business:
*podiums-Judy talked to Marty and he is giving us two hundred dollars to go towards podiums. We still have to make them, and afterwards they are property of the arts annex, but it is still a lot off our shoulders. I think each person should be in charge of their podiums. I am meeting Judy Saturday morning to go buy 200 dollars worth of plywood (probably enough to make 6 if we can get it cheap). MONDAY- I am going to be in the wood shop as soon as the meeting is over to make two for me and help others. Sam from the metal shop also said he would help us in any way. This weekend, consider what dimensions would work for your pieces.

*labels- I think it is a great idea to have everyone make their own labels. However, we might still want to keep them consistent through format (except for Ryan as his are very relevant to his work). Title/Artist/Medium? or Artist/title/medium? artist/title, year/medium? what do you guys think?

*advertising- I was in the print studio for 4 hours today making hand bills for the opening. Maybe 150. There is more paper to print more, but I had to go to work and I only had Andrew there to help me. If you want to take some, they are on my desk at the studio. Because we have so few, I think these should be given to people very interested, not just handed out at random.

*money- A lot of people are going to be at the opening. How much money do we have for alcohol?

*space- Eight of us have yet to see the space. Do we have a key? Vanessa-can you see if we can get into the space early so the whole group can see what we are working with? It is going to be a tight fit, but I think that will make us choose our work more carefully and put on a kick ass show.

*mash potatoes- I just wanted you all to know that I have really enjoyed this group and am so excited about the show. I feel very confident that each of us will work very hard to put together the best exhibit we can.

Sorry that was so long; i have had a long day and maybe one too many beers. Please respond to this blog if you have conscerns or answers. I rather not wait till Monday to go over all of this.

CRITIQUE-Friday

Critique this Friday is 9:30-Noon. Sorry for not posting this earlier, I seriously thought I had told you'll.

Answers from Rita

We can all send a piece of artwork. Anyone can come, just pay the fee and we will figure something out. She is going to email me the dimensions and details about the space we will be using.

If anyone has ideas or feelings about how our group will be represented please contribute them.

Wunderkammer?!

love,
natalie

Email from Rita

I am posting the email I got from Rita for those of you who still need to register. A decision needs to be made soon, because registration is under a time constraint. The code that Rita mentions only applies to the fourth person. Otherwise, you can pay with a credit card (60.00). I am meeting with her today to discuss taking everyones artwork, and the details of this little excursion.

-Natalie

Dear all,

I am sending this note to those of you attending the CIEL Student Symposium at Fairhaven on April 10-12. Thanks to all of you for being willing to represent the college. If it is like past student symposia, I expect you will really enjoy meeting students from other colleges and hearing them speak in some depth about their work.

Here are the titles and team members for our three presentations:

1. "Skin" LaGuana Smith, Sarah Sweet. Artee Young, Director of the Tacoma Program

2. "Doing Work that Matters" Natalie Miller, Kim Retherford, Kate Clark. Rita Pougiales, Evergreen's CIEL coordinator

3. "PRESS:Creating a Culture of Writing." Tyler Bennett, Meghan McNealy. David Wolach, Evergreen faculty member.

I have logged on to the draft program. It still contains some errors, and I have passed on correct information on titles and participant names. So if you go on and find incorrect information be assured that they have received corrections from me.

So here are details for you. Each of these requires you to respond to me or to go on-line. The most time sensitive step is to go to the on-line registration site. If you can do this by tomorrow, we will get a bit of break on the conference fee. So here goes...

1. Each person has to register individually. They have a very easy on-line process. Just go to http://www.festivalofscholarship.com/ and fill out the form. It requires you to pay the conference fee. We are covering that on what we call a "Purchase Order." The number you should put in for that is R0014394 If any of you have difficulty with this please be in touch with Janet Herbison (facultyhiring@evergreen.edu). Her office is SEM II D 4102. And her phone number is 360-867-6863.

2. We have reserved a van to get folks to Fairhaven College. Once we are there, there will be shuttle service to get people in and out of Bellingham. Please let me know if you would like to go in the van. We won't be able to cover your transportation costs if you drive a private vehicle. Once I hear who would like to take the van, I will ask when you want to leave. Since events get started Thursday morning, we might consider going up Wednesday evening.

3. We will provide lodging for anyone who needs it. Hopefully the students on each team can share a room. Let me know if you want us to make these reservations and with whom you will share a room. We cover the cost for this.

4, The conference fee includes lunches and one dinner. For all other meals, we will ask you to keep your receipts. The state sets an upper limit for what we can reimburse for each meal. I will let you know those amounts before we go.

(Because this has some personal information in it, I will only leave it on the blog for a day or so. I suggest printing it out if you need the info.)
